Some deposits have been found where the amethyst was changed naturally by high temperatures from nearby molten rock to brown citrine, but almost all citrine on the market today is pale amethyst that has been heat-treated to produce the popular yellow, orange and sherry colored desired stones.  All of the heat-treated material has a red tint, while natural citrine does not.

Citrine crystals can form together with amethyst or smoky quartz to form a bi-colored quartz called “ametrine.”
